Dear Laura Cline,
I have really enjoyed this class and having you as my professor. English has not always been my favorite of classes but you helped turn it around for me. As of right now if I could I would continue taking English next semester as long as you were the professor for it. You were able to add your own style to it and make it fun for me. Instead of just having assignments like I always wrote in other English classes you gave us assignments with different twists to them.
This class has helped me learn how to properly analyze a piece of literature, whether it’s a poem or a novel. Building up this skill in here will give me the chance to do better in my career or in any part of my life when it calls for it. Before this class I thought that I knew how to do analyzing well, but after working with it for a few times I realized that it’s a lot harder than I thought it was. Being able to analyze something well is a very important thing, not just in school but also out in the work place or life. If I can analyze well then I will be able to help my co-workers a lot better than if I couldn’t analyze well.
The readings in this class did many things for me. First, the poems made me realize that not all poems are the same, and that I can actually enjoy them and understand them if I take the time to find the right one. Frankenstein was a bit harder for me. I couldn’t get into it in the beginning at all and I was dreading the rest of the novel. Once I got past all the letters that are being written in the beginning and got to the full out story, I fell in love. It was a great book and opened up my eyes to a different kind of literature. Yes, I like novels about monsters such as Frankenstein and vampires, but now I want to start reading the older ones. I want to find more books like this that were written during the same time period. These reading selections helped to make the class even more interesting for me. Yes we had to write papers on certain things, but using these readings and different takes on them. It just made the class so much more interesting and fun.
I feel that I am successfully meeting the learning requirements for this class. I came into this class feeling like a good writer but still second guessing myself, but now I feel like I’m a good writer who doesn’t need to second guess herself anymore. I still use the same organization that I have always used when putting my paper together, and I still edit it the same way that I did before this class but now I know exactly what to look for and have others look for as well. After taking this class I am finally able to look into the reading that I am given. I take the time to figure out what the author was trying to say for each line or paragraph. I used to be a fast reader, I still am, but now I take the time to try and understand fully what the author was trying to say to the reader. When I finish a book I actually walk away with something even more interesting than what I would have before this class. It has helped make the readings even more enjoyable.
One of my challenges in this class was analyzing. I love to summarize and wasn’t so good at analyzing. Once I wrote that first paper that you had us write, I figured out what I was doing wrong so that I could stop it. I feel that I have improved on analyzing a lot this semester. I still struggle with it but I slow down, take my time, and make sure that I’m giving enough of a description like I’m talking to someone who has read what I’m talking about. Second would have to be finding the motivation to read the assigned readings. Like I said before, they were hard for me. I wasn’t interested in the poems or Frankenstein at all, but once I got past my struggles with them I started to enjoy them. I know that I have to find poems that are easy for me to understand, they may be super easy to others but that’s ok. With Frankenstein I just had to get past the letters and realize that there was a good story in there after all.
Thank you for this wonderful class. I learned a lot on improving my writing and reading. The lessons that I have learned here will defiantly carry over to other classes, this semester and the future, and in my career. I will be recommending you to other students who need to take this class because not only did you make it fun, but you helped me to realize what I needed to fix without full out stating it, you showed me. Thank you for this wonderful semester.

Sincerely,
Shannyn Barker

Shannyn, I feel the same way about Frankenstein! I too was so uninterested in the beginning and thought I'd never get through it. Once I got into it further I found myself very intrigued and wanting to know more. I was severely disappointed with the ending because I was expecting a more dramatic finish, but otherwise, I liked it a lot. I still can't quite figure out how this Frankenstein became the green monster with metal plugs in his neck... but it is quite interesting to find out where it got started. Best of luck for the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Shannyn, I totally felt the same way about the novel Frankenstein, I hated the beginning haha but once I got past it I too fell in love with the book. It was really good I'm glad I pushed through to read it. I also agree that she made the class so much more fun with the assignments we were given. It was so much different then just a English class with essays and whatnot. Good luck on your final paper!
ReplyDeleteHey Shannyn,
ReplyDeleteI feel the exact same way about summary and analyze, I feel like I gained so much more knowledge about the two and the difference. It's really awesome that you feel more confident about your writing coming out of this class and not having to second guess yourself or your work. I do feel like I have become a better writer coming out of this online English course but more writing and English classes wouldn't hurt me one bit and that's what I plan on taking next semester. Good luck in the last few weeks of the semester and the final portfolio!
I agree with you when you say that Frankenstein took a while to get into. I know that when I started reading it I thought it dragged on and on, but that was also during the letters to the sister. I think that Mary Shelley could have done with one letter and got to the point faster.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear how much analyzing has helped you in your writing and reading. Analyzing is really a tough thing to do, compared to summarizing. But like you said, it is really useful for school and work. Essentially, English is one of the best classes to take because it helps you in all classes. I know that every class I took this semester required me to write papers, and I know that taking this English class really helped me to write papers I was proud of.
